EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE

The 10-foot, solid marble statue of St. Mary – weighing in at two tons and adorning the main entrance of St. Mary’s Hospital since 1994 – was moved by crane to a temporary location near the hospital’s new main entrance that opened this summer. The new entrance and lobby are part of a larger renovation effort that includes extensive parking lot upgrades. These changes have paved the way for construction of the new Emergency Department (ED) that begins October 2003 and is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2004.

The renovation of St. Joseph’s ED and construction of a new ED at St. Mary’s is funded largely through charitable donations to Carondelet Foundation’s A Matter of Life capital campaign. To date, $8.7 million of the $10 million needed has been raised. Gifts and pledges of $15,000 or greater have been received from the following generous donors:

BENEFITING CARONDELET HEALTH NETWORK

Carondelet Foundation raises, manages and allocates charitable funds for St. Mary’s, St. Joseph’s and Holy Cross hospitals, which comprise Carondelet Health Network (CHN). CHN is an affiliate of Ascension Health, the largest not-for-profit healthcare system in the country. As a not-for-profit organization, Carondelet relies on community support to sustain and enhance our mission in Southern Arizona.

In Fiscal Year (FY) ending June 30, 2003, Carondelet Foundation received nearly $3 million in charitable dollars and secured a federal appropriation of $591,000. Gifts to Carondelet are used to fund hospital renovations and improvements, up-to-date medical equipment, inpatient and outpatient services, community based programs and services that make up our network, continuing education for staff, and other hospital needs.
Carondelet Foundation allocated $2,032,503 to CHN in the past fiscal year.

THE 2003 TEA

Spending time with friends of Carondelet Foundation is a high priority for trustees and staff, who organize three special events each year to do just that. Sister St. Joan Willert, CSJ was a special guest at one of those occasions, a Donor Tea held in May at Carondelet Foundation. Sister St. Joan, who stepped down as President and CEO of Carondelet a few years ago, was in town for a visit.

The Tea offered the opportunity to honor Mrs. Anthony Forte and Armstrong McDonald Foundation representatives Mike and Diana Bouchard. The Foundation presented them with beautiful replicas of the larger Trek statues that adorn the front lobbies at St. Joseph’s and St. Mary’s hospitals. The gifts acknowledge membership in Carondelet Foundation’s Millennium Club for donors of at least $25,000 or estate gifts of $100,000 or more.

The Trek statues, commissioned in 1989 from local artist Dan Bates, depict the last leg of the journey to Tucson undertaken by seven Sisters of St. Joseph in 1870. They traveled by train from Missouri to San Francisco and then by boat to San Diego. A 36-day arduous wagon trek to Tucson followed. Historically correct bronzes that are western themed and show exacting detail are Dan’s specialty. His work is part of the Tucson Museum of Art’s permanent collection and is shown in galleries throughout Arizona and the United States.
