Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Foundation Makes Generous Financial Commitment to Development of Carondelet Health Network’s Sahuarita Hospital

Tucson, Arizona – December 9, 2007 – Carondelet Health Network and Carondelet
Foundation are extremely proud to announce a $1 million gift from the Freeport-
McMoRan Copper & Gold Foundation. This highly generous financial commitment will
be directed toward the building of Carondelet Health Network’s Sahuarita Hospital in
Sahuarita, Arizona.

“This is one of the largest single gifts made to date by the company in Southern
Arizona,” stated Pamela Doherty, Chief Operating Officer of Carondelet Foundation.
“We at the Carondelet Foundation are proud that the leadership team at Freeport-
McMoRan and the company’s Sierrita Mine have seen the incredible benefit of bringing
a hospital to the Sahuarita/Green Valley area and are committed to assisting Carondelet
in making this state-of-the-art facility a reality for community residents.”

Freeport-McMoRan’s Sierrita Mine in Green Valley, which employs more than 1,000
people, is only about 10 miles from the Town of Sahuarita. Phoenix-based Freeport-
McMoRan Copper & Gold acquired Phelps Dodge Corp. in March.

"This commitment to healthcare in our region continues a long tradition of support by the
company for the communities in which we live and work,” said John Broderick, vice
president and general manager of Freeport-McMoRan Sierrita Operations.
“We are committed to investing in projects that will support long-term community
development and create significant benefit for community members now and into the
future” Broderick said.

Carondelet Health Network’s planned hospital will offer general, medical and surgical
inpatient services, emergency, imaging, and a wide array of outpatient services. The
hospital will be located at the southwest corner of Sahuarita and La Villita Roads.
Hospital planning and design are projected for 2009, with a projected opening in 2012.
“The need for a local hospital in the Sahuarita/Green Valley community has been evident
for some time,” stated Rich Polheber, Carondelet senior executive responsible for
oversight of this hospital project. Mr. Polheber is also CEO of Carondelet Holy Cross
Hospital in Nogales. “By the time Sahuarita Hospital opens for use, the projected
population of the surrounding area will exceed 115,000 individuals, added Mr. Polheber.
“The mission of Carondelet Health Network and the ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph
have always been to serve the underserved. We are proud to partner with caring
organizations like Freeport-McMoRan to make a new hospital a reality in this
community.”

Carondelet Health Network Names Ruth Brinkley President and CEO - Brinkley also Named West Ministry Market Leader for Ascension Health
(TUCSON) December 3, 2007 – Ruth Brinkley, RN, MSN, FACHE, has been named President and CEO for Carondelet Health Network (CHN) in Tucson, Ariz., and West Ministry Market Leader for Ascension Health, it was announced today. Brinkley replaces Sally E. Jeffcoat, FACHE, who recently became Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Healthcare Operations for Ascension Health. Brinkley will assume both new roles on December 31, 2007.

As President and CEO of CHN, Brinkley will be responsible for the strategic leadership and direction of the system, including: stewardship of resources to ensure continued achievement of the system’s mission and vision; pursuit of clinical excellence, quality and patient safety initiatives in partnership with CHN physicians; and, continued growth to expand Catholic healthcare throughout Southern Arizona.

In addition, Brinkley will be one of nine Ascension Health Ministry Market Leaders, with extended oversight of Carondelet Health Network, St. Joseph Regional Medical Center (Lewiston, Idaho), Carondelet Health System (Kansas City, Mo.) and Lourdes Health Network (Pasco, Wash.). Ministry Market Leaders have responsibility for the strategic positioning and operational performance of Health Ministries within a specific geographic region. In addition, they promote the sharing of best practices and linkages between Health Ministries across the country. This model provides flexibility to work together on Ascension Health projects while dealing with the unique circumstances and challenges being faced in different parts of the country.

Brinkley will report to the local CHN Board as President and CEO, and to Robert J. Henkel, Chief Operating Officer for Ascension Health as West Ministry Market Leader.

Both CHN Board members and Ascension Health leadership involved in Brinkley’s selection are enthusiastic about her new role. “The search committee conducted an exhaustive national search,” said Susan Boswell, CHN Board Chair. “Ruth embodies all the qualities we were looking for in a President and CEO. She is someone who will be able to take Carondelet to the next level.”

“We are pleased to welcome Ruth as West Ministry Market Leader,” said Robert J. Henkel, Chief Operating Officer, Ascension Health. “Ministry Market Leaders provide us with the agility and flexibility to adjust to the unique needs of each community and the ever-changing healthcare environment. Her leadership will further improve the ability of our Health Ministries to serve their communities, carry out Ascension Health’s Mission, and help us achieve our Strategic Direction, which calls for us to transform healthcare by 2020.” The concept of Ministry Market Leaders is part of Ascension Health’s distributed leadership model and ensures a continued vital presence in all its communities.

Brinkley brings more than 30 years of healthcare experience – including more than 20 years of Catholic healthcare experience – to her new roles. Her many accomplishments include system development and integration, strategic planning and operations, performance improvement, physician development and leadership development. Brinkley comes to Carondelet from Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) where she has worked for the last nine years, including five years as President and CEO of Memorial Health Care System in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Prior to assuming the President and CEO role at Memorial, she served as Senior Vice President of Performance Management and Group Vice President of Operations and Continuum of Care. Prior to her work with CHI, Brinkley served as Vice President, Hospital Operations and Patient Care for DePaul Health Center in St. Louis, Missouri. A former nurse, Ruth has held appointments as Chief Nursing Officer and Associate Dean, Clinical Practice for the University of Alabama, School of Nursing. Ruth holds a nursing degree from the Michael Reese Hospital School of Nursing and a Masters of Science in Nursing from DePaul University of Chicago.

“I am both delighted and honored to accept the President and CEO position with CHN and the West Ministry Market Leader position with Ascension Health,” said Brinkley. “This is a wonderful opportunity to use my 30-plus years of healthcare experience, including 20 years of Catholic healthcare experience, to not only continue the great work already being done in Tucson, but also to explore opportunities for all of the Health Ministries in the West market and throughout Ascension Health.”

Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital Chief Nursing Officer Peggy MacMacken Honored as a Legend in Nursing

Tucson, Arizona – November 27, 2007 – Carondelet Health Network is proud to announce an incredible recognition for St. Joseph’s Hospital Chief Nursing Officer, Peggy MacMacken, RN, MS, CNAA, BC. At this year’s March of Dimes’ Nurses of the Year Awards in Scottsdale on November 17, Peggy was overwhelmed to be named a Legend in Nursing. This is a tremendous recognition for a lifetime of service in the field of healthcare.

In the work setting, she creates an environment that gives nurses the confidence that they can achieve their highest aspirations. “How To” Tips for Avoiding the Cold and Flu This Season
Tucson, Arizona – November 13, 2007 – Now that cold and flu season has arrived, Carondelet Health Network wants to remind children and adults that keeping their hands clean is the most effective way to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. There is an effective way to wash your hands:

  • Use warm water.
  • Rub your hands vigorously for 10-15 seconds.
  • Pay special attention to the backs of your hands, wrists, between fingers, and under fingernails.
  • Rinse your hands completely under warm running water.
  • Dry them with a clean towel.
  • Then use that towel to turn off the tap (which you originally turned on with potentially dirty hands).
  • If soap and water are not available, alcohol-based gels and hand wipes are good
    alternatives.

Even hands that appear to be clean may be carrying germs and microorganisms that can make you ill. Everyone should wash his or her hands:

  • Before eating
  • After being outdoors
  • After playing with pets
  • After using the bathroom
  • After blowing his/her nose

Tips for parents of school-aged children:

  • One of the most germ-filled surfaces in the classroom is the community pencil sharpener, according to Dr. Charles Gerba, UA. He recommends sending your child to school with mechanical pencils.
  • Check with the teacher to make certain tabletops and desktops are being cleaned as well as all community toys.
  • Send your child to school with facial tissues that prevent the spread of cold and flu viruses.
  • Children should not borrow crayons. If possible, each child should have his or her own. All objects passed from one child to another are potentially germ carriers.

Some other tips:

  • In office environments, clean shared equipment like photocopiers, fax machines, computers and telephone at least once a day and twice daily if heavily used and if someone in the office is ill.
  • Always clean the shopping cart handle when headed into the grocery or department store.

Tips compiled by Carondelet Health Network’s Monica Fontes, Infection Control. Families in need of a primary care physician can visit www.carondelet.org/cmg or call (520) 872-7324. Media entities interested in interviews on preventative medicine and issues regarding cold and flu season health can contact Carondelet Marketing and Public Relations at (520) 349-1845.

Carondelet Health Network Partners with Versant Advantage to Improve Patient Care With RN Residency Program

Tucson, AZ—October 30, 2007—Carondelet Health Network proudly announces the addition of Versant RN Residency, developed by Versant Advantage, Inc., to bolster the confidence and competence of new nurses and ensure that the highest standards of patient care are delivered across our network of hospitals.

“Carondelet Health Network is committed to taking proactive steps to maintain a high benchmark for patient care at our hospitals,” said Peggy MacMacken, Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital Chief Nursing Officer and executive sponsor for Versant. “Partnering with Versant Advantage helps us ensure that newly graduated nurses at Carondelet hospitals have the training they need to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all of our patients. After carefully investigating the needs of new nurses who are trying to achieve the same patient care goals as long-time RNs, we decided that the Versant RN Residency program afforded the most comprehensive solution for bridging the gap between academic programs and hospital nursing.”

The first class in the 18-week Versant RN Residency program at Carondelet Health Network got underway October 11 with 40 newly graduated nurses participating at Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital, Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital, Carondelet Holy Cross Hospital, and the Tucson Heart Hospital. The program features support from a network of senior nurses to ensure that RN residents are well-equipped to deliver quality patient care. Mastery of critical thinking skills, coordination of care, and time management are among the numerous core competencies that must be met as part of the successful completion of the residency.

Previously, each Carondelet hospital had its own orientation program for training new nurses in specific hospital practices and standards. Versant’s standardized curriculum replaces these individual programs.

With four hospitals and eleven facilities, Carondelet Health Network is the oldest and largest healthcare organization in Arizona. Carondelet ranks as one of the top 15 employers in the area, and received the 2005 Arizona Nurses Association Employer Excellence award. CHN has also been recognized by AARP in 2005 and 2006 as one of 50 best employers in the United States for workers over 50. Carondelet was also awarded the Bernard Nash Award in 2005, which recognizing employers with exemplary practice in recruitment, flexible work opportunities and rehiring of retirees.

“We have structured the Versant RN Residency to create a standardized quality of care for all patients,” said Charles Krozek, RN, MN, president and managing director of Versant Advantage, Inc. “The Versant RN Residency will help newly graduated RNs at Carondelet by de-mystifying the inner workings of the hospital, as well as the day-to-day demands, challenges and tremendous rewards that are part and parcel of the delivery of patient care. We look forward to collaborating with Carondelet Health Networks for the benefit of their patient populations, and the surrounding communities that they serve.”

Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital will host its 6th Annual Carondelet Rehabilitation PAWS and Babes “Howl-oween” Costume Parade

Wednesday, October 17, 2007 beginning at 10:30am at St. Joseph’s Hospital, 350 N. Wilmot Road.

Therapy dogs and children of Carondelet St. Joseph’s Rehabilitation Associates will dress in costume and parade through the hospital distributing Halloween treats to staff and patients.

“This event has become a yearly tradition here at St. Joseph’s. It’s a chance for many patients and staff to be treated to a visit from our therapy dogs,” said Jean Glattke, Director of Carondelet Rehabilitation Services. “The parade is also an opportunity to thank the PAWS volunteers for all the time and support they provide to St. Joseph’s Hospital.”

The dogs of PAWS for Health, the animal assisted therapy program, are specially trained and certified, working with licensed rehabilitation therapists to give patients motivation during their recovery. Interaction with these animals can improve balance, mobility, coordination, even memory and endurance. For example: throwing a ball for a dog to retrieve or simply petting the animal works on range of motion and some patients experience less pain than with traditional therapy.

The Howl-oween Parade will begin in the first floor hallway directly outside Outpatient Rehabilitation, making stops on several floors of the hospital and finishing in the Auditorium for sweet treats, photos and fun.

MEDIA NOTE: Any media interested in attending is asked to assemble in the St. Joseph’s Hospital Lobby no later than 10:25am to be escorted to the starting point of the parade. Please contact Lisa Contreras at 444-6600 if you plan to attend.

Sixth Annual "Walk to Remember"
In Honor of National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month
Saturday, October 6, 2007, 10:00 a.m., Tucson Children's Memorial Park

Tucson, Arizona – September 12, 2006 - On Saturday, October 6, 2007, parents who have
experienced the heartbreaking death of a baby from miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy,
stillbirth, or newborn death will join hands at 10:00 a.m. for a "Walk to Remember" at
Children's Memorial Park. The short walk, celebration of life ceremony, and balloon release
will commemorate these special children.

"Pregnancy loss and infant loss are two of the most misunderstood deaths experienced,” said
Mina Rose, R.N.C., of Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital, who organizes the Walk and created
Footprints, a community-wide, perinatal support group and program for parents. "The
hopes, dreams, plans, love and anticipation for these children are very real and the Walk
enables parents to celebrate the lives of their babies while providing a healthy outlet for the
grieving process.”

According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, stillbirths
occur in 1 in every 200 pregnancies; and miscarriages occur in confirmed pregnancies 15-
20% of the time. There are over 25,000 newborn deaths (death within the 1st 28 days of life)
per year in the United States.

“Grief at the death of a newborn, or a baby who has died during pregnancy, is generally not
acknowledged or accepted as the major life event that it is. Parents are expected to move on
and pick up the pieces of their lives fairly quickly. The baby is quickly forgotten by others;
leaving the parents alone in their grief. The subsequent isolation may create difficulties in the
expression of feelings, which can unnecessarily prolong the time of grieving,” said Rose.

Footprints Parent Support Group is a self-help support group that provides a comforting
and healing environment where parents can share their experiences, thoughts and feelings.
Parents learn that the deeply felt, long-lasting feelings they are having are normal. "Through
listening to other parents, you find the strength to heal and grow and begin to rebuild your
life," Rose explained. Footprints Support Group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of
each month at 7:30 pm, at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church, Calvin Hall, 3809 E. 3rd Street.
For more information, please call (520) 873-6590. For bereavement support in Spanish,
contact Jennie Ramos at Huellas (520-906-3271).

Important Media Note: If you plan to cover event, please contact Lisa Contreras at
444-6600 to RSVP so families will be aware of media attendance. Families and event organizers may also be available for interviews prior to event.

Carondelet St. Mary’s Burn Specialists Encourage Tucsonans to Let the Pros Handle the Fireworks

Tucson, Arizona – June 29, 2007 - Nothing says 4th of July in a more spectacular way than a fireworks display. In the wrong hands, however, fireworks can be dangerous, even deadly. Carondelet St. Mary’s Burn Unit specialists are encouraging Tucsonans to view professional displays this Independence Day rather than attempting the use of any form of residential fireworks, and to avoid using these incendiary devices in the weeks following the holiday as well. Sixty percent of injuries from fireworks occur during the two weeks before and the two weeks following Independence Day (Green & Joholske 2006).

According to Kathleen Jones, Outreach Coordinator for Burn Prevention at St. Mary’s Hospital, “While many states, including Arizona, have banned most fireworks from residential use, even small firecrackers and sparklers can, and do, cause significant injuries.” In fact, according to the American Burn Association, sparklers can burn at temperatures up to one thousand degrees. “Parents think nothing of giving their little ones, 5 years and under, a sparkler to play with during the July 4th holiday, when they certainly wouldn't dream of giving them a lighter, which is actually not as hot,” states Jones. “Giving a child a sparkler is like giving them a piece of hot, molten metal to hold in their hand and twirl in the air, usually near other excited children running around in the dark holding onto sparklers. It is a very dangerous thing to do.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, an estimated 10,800 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms in the U.S. for fireworks-related injuries in 2005 (Greene & Joholske 2006).

  • 45% of fireworks-related injuries involve children 14-years-of-age and younger
  • The type of fireworks that accounted for the majority of these injuries included
    firecrackers (26%), sparklers (17%), and rockets (17%)
  • Sparklers were associated with over half of the estimated injuries among children
    under 5-years-of-age
  • Fireworks-related injuries most frequently involved hands and fingers (31%), eyes
(25%), and the head and face (20%)

According to Jones, “All to often, Carondelet St. Mary’s clinicians see patients who must endure the long-lasting pain and scarring of these preventable burns. The safest way to avoid fireworks related injuries is to leave the displays to the trained professionals.”

Carondelet Health Network Proudly Announces Tucson’s First and Only Neurological Institute

The Carondelet Neurological Institute (CNI), slated to open in early 2008, will offer world-class technologies never before available in North America and a level of care unmatched in Tucson and Southern Arizona.

According to Greg Angle, CEO of Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital, “Until now, hundreds of local patients diagnosed with significant neurological illnesses and injuries have had to seek comprehensive care in other cities, such as Phoenix and Los Angeles. In keeping with our mission of providing exceptional medicine and exceptional care to this region, Carondelet Health Network has made a significant commitment to change this situation.”

Under the leadership of neurosurgeon Eric Sipos, MD and Greg Angle, the Carondelet Neurological Institute will draw upon the expertise of some of Arizona’s top neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neuro-specialists working cooperatively to improve the health and welfare of each patient.

Dr. Sipos, Medical Director for Carondelet Neurological Institute, noted that “A partnership, a unique collaboration between Carondelet’s growing network of hospitals, physicians, clinicians and our team of neurological specialists, will form the heart and soul of the Institute. Our approach represents a quantum leap in the treatment of neurological patients. For the first time, this combination of medical expertise and world class technology will be available to Southern Arizona.”

Construction of the Carondelet Neurological Institute is underway and scheduled for completion in early January. The wide range of technology, services, and equipment will be phased into operation between January and June 2008.

Postpartum Depression Awareness Week to be Marked with Proclamation and Play

Tucson, Arizona – May 15, 2007 – Mayor Bob Walkup has declared May 13 through May 19, 2007 Postpartum Depression Awareness Week in Tucson. The mayor will read his proclamation this Thursday, May 17, 2007 at a noon luncheon event in the St. Joseph’s Hospital Auditorium. The mayor’s announcement will be commemorated with the performance of an original play about Postpartum Depression called “In the Shadow of My Son” written by playwright Nadine Barnard, directed by Sara Falconer, and performed by local Tucson actors.

Postpartum depression is a complex mix of physical, emotional, and behavioral changes that occur after giving birth. About 50 to 75 percent of new mothers experience some form of postpartum mood disorder. The majority faces the “baby blues” but about 10 to 25 percent develop a more severe and longer-lasting depression. Some even experience a severe condition called postpartum psychosis.

“In the Shadow of My Son” follows the experiences of several mothers – all of different classes, ethnicities, and religions – as they battled postpartum depression.

Medical clinicians who specialize in postpartum depression and the playwright of “In the Shadow of My Son” will be available for interviews immediately following the luncheon. Any media interested in covering the proclamation and/or play should contact Lisa Contreras at (520) 444-6600.

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords To Honor Tucson’s “Fabulous 50” Nurses as Keynote Speaker

Tucson, Arizona – May 11, 2007 - The guest speaker at The Fab 50 Gala celebration on Saturday, May 12, 2007 at El Conquistador Resort is U. S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Giffords feels strongly about addressing Tucson’s premiere nursing event to discuss her commitment to strengthening healthcare in District 8 and nationwide.

The Congresswoman has a long-standing interest in supporting the nursing industry. Just a few years ago, she participated in Tucson’s effort to raise awareness about the challenge facing today’s nurses by “walking a mile with a nurse”. As part of the successful community-wide awareness campaign, Giffords joined Carondelet St. Joseph’s Vice President of Patient Care Services Peggy MacMacken, and shadowed a nurse at the hospital. That experience provided Giffords with a new appreciation of the important role nurses play in the healthcare arena. This week she returns to Tucson to help honor these nurses and join in their effort to encourage careers in nursing.

The Fab 50 Gala is Tucson Nursing Association’s celebratory end to national “Nurses Week”, a week of acknowledgment for the nursing profession. The event begins at 6pm. Congresswoman Giffords will speak at 8pm.

Carondelet’s “Tot Shots” Immunization Clinic Recognized by Arizona Partnership for Immunization

Tucson, Arizona – May 9, 2007 – Carondelet’s Tot Shots Immunization clinic has received a “Hot Shots” award from the Arizona Partnership for Immunization (TAPI), a non-profit statewide coalition formed to increase the number of Arizona children fully immunized against preventable childhood diseases like measles, mumps, polio and whooping cough.

Tot Shots, now in its tenth year, is the largest immunization clinic located in an Arizona Department of Health Services Women, Infants and Children (WIC) facility in Pima County. The clinic is provided the first three Thursdays of the month at the Tucson Community Food Bank where the WIC offices are housed. No fee is charged for the immunization services. In addition to providing vaccination services to children, Tot Shots staff members educate parents about the importance of childhood immunizations and the need to obtain all shots on schedule in order to complete a vaccine series.

TAPI recognized Tot Shots with the Hot Shots – Special Achievement Award. This award honors public and private sector individuals and organizations who have given a tremendous amount of time and effort, to the extent of going above and beyond the call of duty, to increase childhood immunizations in Arizona.

The Tot Shots program, funded through community gifts via the Carondelet Foundation, is staffed by Carondelet Health Network associates, community volunteers, and Pima County Health Department employees.

In 1993, only 43% of Arizona’s two-year-olds were fully immunized against preventable childhood diseases. Through the efforts of TAPI’s partners from both the public and private sectors, immunization coverage rates in Arizona have improved dramatically, with nearly three in four children fully immunized by age two. By 2010, TAPI wants to provide age-appropriate immunizations to at least 90% of Arizona’s children before their second birthday and to encourage appropriate immunizations throughout a child’s life.

Carondelet Health Network Celebrates Volunteers During National Volunteer Week, April 15-2

Tucson, Arizona – April 13, 2007 – National Volunteer Week, April 15 through 21, offers Carondelet Health Network a wonderful opportunity to join with nonprofit organizations across America in thanking people who willingly donate their time and talent to provide vital services to their communities.

Carondelet will honor, through special individual recognition, the many volunteers who work regularly at St. Joseph’s Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, Tucson Heart Hospital, and Holy Cross Hospital in Nogales, as well as through Carondelet Hospice and Faith Community Nursing.

Carondelet’s volunteers perform a variety of jobs, including providing hospital visitors with information, staffing our gift shops, and preparing special mailings. Specially trained volunteers also visit the homes of patients to provide community-based hospice services.

Without the unselfish dedication of our volunteers, many tasks - large and small - would
not be completed. Our volunteers free our associates to perform the jobs they were trained to do and along the way help to create the compassionate, caring environment for which Carondelet is so justifiably proud.

The National Volunteer Week theme, “Inspire By Example,” truly reflects the power volunteers have to inspire the people they help and to inspire others to serve! National Volunteer Week is sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network.

Tucson Heart Hospital Becomes Tobacco-Free Campus

Tucson, Arizona - March 12, 2007 - Beginning Saturday, March 17, 2007, Tucson Heart Hospital (THH) will become an entirely tobacco-free environment. All employees, patients, and visitors will be prohibited from using cigarettes or any form of tobacco anywhere on the hospital’s property. The launch of the THH tobacco-free campus will be marked by a health fair for employees and medical staff in the lobby of Tucson Heart Hospital on Tuesday, March 20. Associates will have access to useful information about smoking cessation and nutrition, and watch demonstrations of exercise techniques and stress-relieving activities - all in an effort to support those employees who wish to stop smoking in conjunction with the tobacco-free transition, and promote a healthy lifestyle for all staff. At Noon, Tucson Heart Hospital CEO Ed Myers will be presented with a certificate from the Arizona Department of Health Services certifying that THH has met all criteria to qualify as an official “Quit Zone.”

Headed to the Hospital? Take your Laptop!
Carondelet Health Network Offers Free Wireless Access

Tucson, Arizona – March 5, 2007 - As part of Carondelet Health Network’s ongoing commitment to high quality patient care and customer service, Carondelet now offers free wireless Internet access at its hospitals for use by its physicians, patients, and guests. This service is available at St. Joseph’s Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, and Holy Cross Hospital in Nogales.

Anyone can use their personal laptops, PDAs, and other handheld devices to access the Internet via Carondelet’s public wireless network. Those visiting the CHN hospitals can receive fast, reliable access to surf the Internet, check e-mail, and stay connected to life beyond the hospital walls. The wireless service is especially beneficial to patients, their families, and friends who may need to remain in the hospital for an extended period of time and need to stay connected for personal or work-related reasons.

The wireless Internet access, offered at CHN, is available to patients and their visitors who provide their own wireless-enabled devices. This Internet access is on an open and unsecured network, similar to the networks available at airports and coffee shops. This means that any information sent or received could potentially be intercepted, so users are cautioned not to transmit credit card numbers or other personal information. The free public wireless network is completely segregated from the secured clinical wireless network that physicians and other health professionals can access. Patient clinical data is secure and inaccessible from the public wireless service.

"It's OK to Ask" Pilot Program Launched at Carondelet St. Mary's Hospital

Tucson, Arizona – February 13, 2007 - Carondelet Health Network has launched an aggressive patient safety campaign called “It’s OK to Ask.” The pilot project kicked off at Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital. This program promotes the active participation of patients and families in the patient’s care, by encouraging them to ask questions of their caregivers and become “partners” in their healthcare. The goal is to reduce the risk of errors and further promote Carondelet Health Network’s culture of safety initiatives.

Being admitted to a hospital can be overwhelming, even frightening for a patient. Often they and their family members are afraid to ask questions about their illness, their treatment, and their medications. They sometimes feel anxious about requesting aid from medical staff, nurses, or hospital personnel. The “It’s OK to Ask” Program is meant to change that.

The “It’s OK to Ask” Program includes 4 components of Patient Safety. These components are: Hand Hygiene, Medication Safety, Improved Communication, and Reduction of Falls and Safe Patient Handling.

Each Carondelet St. Mary’s nurse will be responsible for ensuring that patients and their families are aware of the “It’s OK to Ask” program.

Nurses and all Carondelet caregivers will assure patients that “It’s OK to Ask” the following:

  • It’s OK to Ask every caregiver if they have cleaned their hands before they touch them.
  • It’s OK to Ask their family or any visitors to clean their hands when they enter and upon leaving their room.
  • It’s OK to Ask questions about the medications they receive.
  • It’s OK to Ask nurses and caregivers to check their name and date of birth against their armband before giving any medications or performing any tests.
  • It’s OK to Ask for help to the bathroom or when getting up.
  • It’s OK to Ask their caregiver to see his/her badge and ask for their name and title.
  • It’s OK to Ask ANYTIME if the patient or their family have questions or concerns about your care.

Education was provided to all Carondelet St. Mary’s associates who have patient contact as well as St. Mary’s medical staff and volunteers. The material includes tips on introducing the program to patients, a script for explaining the program, a sample of the program brochure, and an FAQ sheet. The goal is to provide education to every patient and their family that receives care at Carondelet St. Mary’s and all affiliated clinics and programs.

I look forward in working with the senior leadership and Boards in advancing our Call to Action: Healthcare That Is Safe, Healthcare That Works and Healthcare That Leaves No One Behind, for life.”

“KidsCare” Town Hall Event Draws Local, State and National Attention to the Problem of Uninsured Children

Tucson, Arizona – January 11, 2007 - A grassroots effort to mobilize children’s advocates throughout Southern Arizona kicked off today with a nationwide town hall broadcast on the problem of uninsured children in America. 36 cities participated in the event, hosted in Tucson by Carondelet Health Network and the Children’s Action Alliance.

The town hall will help launch an effort to:

  • Raise awareness among families whose children may qualify for KidsCare, Arizona’s state funded healthcare insurance plan for uninsured kids
  • Motivate children’s advocates to encourage state legislators to support Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano’s new initiative to fund community outreach for KidsCare
  • Encourage the U.S. Congress to continue federal funding for SCHIP or the State Child Health Insurance Program

“Sufficient healthcare coverage is the key to healthy children, says town hall attendee Enrique Serna, Deputy County Administrator for Health Services, “and good health determines a child’s success in school, at home, and in their community.”

In Arizona alone, more than 100,000 children live without healthcare insurance coverage. This means, they may not receive necessary immunizations, well checks, even the medications they need. KidsCare offers a low or no cost health insurance to children in qualifying families, including medical, dental, prescription, and vision coverage.

In Southern Arizona, a recent study showed 4 zip codes in the Tucson area alone with a significant number of children whose families would qualify for KidsCare coverage, but who are not enrolled in the program. The zip codes include: 85705, 85710, 85711,and 85730.

A family of 4 - making $40,000 a year or $3,334 per month - can qualify for the program. In fact, Governor Napolitano is proposing an increase in the income eligibility level.

To find out if a family qualifies, interested individuals can call a statewide hotline number, 1-877-764-KIDS (5437), or speak directly with local Carondelet Health Network representative, Renee Perez, a KidsCare Outreach Coordinator, at 520-873-5042.
