Local health care providers and organizations join forces with CLEAR CHANNEL RADIO TUCSON and KOLD News 13 for the Your Health Hotline phone-a-thon!

100 Your Health Hotline volunteers will be at CLEAR CHANNEL RADIO TUCSON stations answering phone calls from Southern Arizonans about how to get no or low cost medical
care. Your Health’s goal is to help individuals and families get physicals, baby well-checks, doctor office visits, dental screenings and treatments, prescription drug coverage, vision care, immunization clinics, AHCCCS enrollment and food stamp assistance, diabetes education, and prenatal care. They will also assist with enrollment in the health discount programs, Santa Cruz Health-e-Connect and Pima Community Access Program, as well as in sliding scale health services at local Community Health Centers.

The Your Health collaborative is comprised of Carondelet Health Network, Children’s Action Alliance, Desert Senita Community Health Center, El Rio Community Health Centers, Marana Health Center and the United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona.

“The Phone-a-Thon event is a very special time, not only to help people get connected to health care resources, but also for us as a community to come together. Grandparents, students, health care providers and community members have all come together for one purpose: to help each other,” said Tara Sklar, Director of Access and Community Health for Carondelet Health Network.

Penelope Jacks, Director, Children's Action Alliance--Southern Arizona states, “If you or your family needs help with health coverage or health care services, please call us… we’re here for you!”

The seven radio stations that comprise CLEAR CHANNEL RADIO TUCSON will encourage their listeners to call the “Your Health Hotline” phone number from 5a - 6:30pm. They will broadcast interviews with people who have already successfully received help finding health care. Local doctors, dentists, business leaders and teachers will speak about how important health care is and how hard it can be to find and pay for. KOLD News 13 will cover the event live during the morning news, and will be broadcasting messages all day about the phone-athon.

Both CLEAR CHANNEL RADIO TUCSON and KOLD News 13 have helped with past Phone-a-thons that connected 1000’s of Arizonans with needed health care services. “We see even more need now than ever before to help the community find health care options. Serving the community is the core of our values. We are hoping to make a difference on the 29th,” states Tim Richards, CLEAR CHANNEL RADIO TUCSON Operations Manager. Michelle Germano, News Director at KOLD News 13 says, “We believe bringing healthcare choices to our viewers, when so many have lost their jobs or can’t afford insurance, is very important. Your Health is going to cut through the red tape and help a lot of our viewers.”

The “Your Health Hotline” phone number is toll free, 1-800-311-0627. It is open now and will be accepting calls for at least the coming year. Or, Southern Arizonan’s can go to www.mypcap.org and click on the “Your Health Hotline” logo. The call and the assistance are free and many of the volunteers are fluent in Spanish.

Tucson Area Leaders to Hold Fundraising Event – In Their Pajamas

Ever wake up in the morning and wish you could go about your business while lounging around in your pajamas? Here’s your chance! The Centurions, one of Tucson’s longest-standing philanthropic organizations, will host its annual fundraising event, The Great Pajama-Rama: A Nightie to Remember at Tucson Electric Park on Saturday, May 15, 2010, starting at 6:00 p.m. Party goers are encouraged to come in their favorite PJs.

The annual party features food, dancing, live music and table games. There will also be raffles, door prizes, costume contests and, of course, this year’s event would not be complete without, you guessed it, bed races. Be sure to stick around for the fireworks extravaganza at 10:00 p.m.

The Centurions, comprised of 220 local business leaders, was founded in 1968 as a fundraising group to support Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital. The group’s first fundraiser, in 1970, was a bowling tournament that netted just over $1,000. In subsequent years, millions of dollars have been raised in support of programs and services at St. Mary’s. Centurions’ funds have supported the St. Mary’s Wound Care Program, Behavioral Health Clinic, Outpatient Rehabilitation, Carondelet Hospice and Palliative Care, the building on a state-of-the art Emergency Center and many other hospital renovation projects.

The mission of Carondelet Health Network is rooted in the legacy of Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital. Founded in 1880 and celebrating its 130th anniversary this year, St. Mary’s serves the needs of an ever-expanding west side with a Mission to Heal.

This year’s Centurion event, The Great Pajama-Rama - A Nightie to Remember, will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at Tucson Electric Park. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, go to: www.thecenturions.com or call the Centurions’ office at 520-873-5032.

CEO Ruth W. Brinkley Named as a Top 25 Minority Healthcare Industry Executive

Ruth W. Brinkley, President & Chief Executive Officer of Carondelet Health Network and West Ministry Market Leader for Ascension Health, has been chosen as one of Modern Healthcare’s Top 25 Minority Executives in Healthcare for 2010. This prestigious award is only presented once every two years. As part of the honor, Brinkley was interviewed for the magazine’s April 19th issue -- available to subscribers and online at www.modernhealthcare.com.

Brinkley was nominated by more than one colleague impressed by her remarkable “servant” leadership, her ability to achieve sustainable results, and the fervent commitment to mission and ministry she has demonstrated during her 35-year healthcare career. “Brinkley has used her insight, wisdom, creativity and leadership skills to transform organizations to successfully anticipate and meet the rapidly changing needs in the healthcare industry,” noted one colleague.

The submission to Modern Healthcare also acknowledged Ruth’s personal journey from RN and staff nurse to CEO and West Ministry Market Leader: “Brinkley sees it as a privilege, honor and responsibility to mentor others and share her ‘story,’ as well as her knowledge and expertise, so that others can experience the same level of incredible satisfaction and respect that she has gained. She is an inspiration to others by showing how perseverance, dedication, hard work, strong faith and a sense of humor can lead to great success.”

Brinkley, who joined Carondelet Health Network in January 2008, leads Southern Arizona’s largest healthcare system. Employing more than 5,500 staff and associates, the Catholic, nonprofit network is comprised of four hospitals – Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital, Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital, Tucson Heart Hospital in Tucson, and Holy Cross Hospital in Nogales, Arizona. Carondelet Health Network also includes the Carondelet Neurological Institute. Located on the campus of St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Carondelet Neurological Institute is Southern Arizona’s state-of-the-art facility for the care of neurological illnesses and injuries. Carondelet also provides community healthcare through the services of Carondelet Medical Group and Carondelet Specialty Group, with 20 primary and specialty care offices and one ambulatory surgery center located throughout southern Arizona. In addition to her role as President and CEO of Carondelet Health Network, Ruth is also one of nine Ascension Health Ministry Market Leaders. As West Ministry Market Leader, she is responsible for extended strategic and operational oversight of St. Joseph Regional Medical Center (Lewiston, ID), and Lourdes Health Network (Pasco, WA). Ascension Health is the nation’s largest Catholic, non-profit health system.

Carondelet was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet 130 years ago this year.

Brinkley is responsible for the strategic, financial and operational success at Carondelet; as well as the Network’s commitment to transform healthcare in Southern Arizona through the expansion of services and access for all as outlined in its Carondelet 2020 strategic plan.

Prior to joining Carondelet and Ascension Health in 2007, Brinkley served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Memorial Health Care System, a Catholic Health Initiatives ministry in Chattanooga, TN. She is a registered nurse and holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in nursing from De Paul University in Chicago. She is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives; a founding member of the Women Business Leaders of the U.S. Health Care Industry Foundation; and a frequent speaker on both health care and broader leadership issues.

Not only will Brinkley be honored nationally with this Modern Healthcare recognition, the Tucson-Southern Arizona Black Chamber of Commerce has also chosen her as one of the 25 Most Influential African Americans in Southern Arizona this month.

And, just last week, as part of the Arizona Daily Star’s “Star 200” top Tucson business listings, Brinkley was named the third most influential woman in Southern Arizona, ranking just behind Governor Jan Brewer and the Superintendent of Tucson Unified School District.

STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM LONG DISTANCE LEARNING ABOUT DIABETES

In the United States today, Type 2 Diabetes is increasingly common among children (ages 6-11) and adolescents (ages 12-19). The disease, which is in large part, the result of poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyles and obesity, accounts for up to 50 percent of new diabetes cases in kids. That’s why it is so important to teach children how to manage and monitor their weight, food choices and blood sugar.

Across southern Arizona, Hispanics and Native Americans have been shown to be at highest risk for the development of Type 2 Diabetes. That’s why Carondelet Health Network, Ha:sañ Education Services and Nogales High School are partnering to bring a valuable educational opportunity to students of the Tohono O’odham Nation and Nogales Unified School District.

Classes of approximately 20 eighth and ninth graders from Ha:sañ Preparatory and Leadership School in Tucson travel to Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital for diabetes education classes each month. In symphony with those efforts, Carondelet offers the same classes at the same time through its telemedicine program to Nogales High School students participating at Carondelet Holy Cross Hospital. The students, though many may potentially be at risk, have not been diagnosed with the disease. They learn together about diabetes prevention from Gwen Gallegos, RN, MS, FNP, CDE, one of Carondelet’s Certified Diabetes Educators and share their reactions to the teachings through a live television interface.

“This program is long overdue,” states Donna Zazworsky, Carondelet’s Vice President of Community Health and Continuum Care. “The kids appear extraordinarily engaged in the process, likely because the classes are fun, the focus is on kids helping kids and it takes place through a medium they are all too familiar with – TV.”

“The Tohono O’odham Nation has a very high diabetes rate,” notes Bill Rosenberg, Director of Ha:sañ Preparatory and Leadership School. “I have been told that it is the highest in the world. All the students at Ha:sañ personally know someone in their family that has diabetes, so we want to provide our students with practical tools that will help them avoid and combat this debilitating disease.”

“The Carondelet program is a modern, interactive class that gives students another way to internalize diabetes information they are provided,” adds Fernando Parra, Nogales High School principal. “We hope that through our combined efforts with Ha:sañ and Carondelet, we can help our students and their families lead a longer, happier, disease-free life.”

Beyond this program for students, Carondelet Health Network offers a wide range of care for those with diabetes, including individual consultations, educational classes for adults, self-management programs, insulin pump training and support groups.
In the U.S., someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds and, on average, a stroke victim dies every 3 to 4 minutes. These are disturbing statistics – considering stroke - the #3 killer - is often preventable. It’s easy to find out if you are at risk.

Assessments may include blood pressure, oxygen levels, pulse, EKG, height/weight, blood sugar, carotid bruit, cholesterol monitoring and medical counseling about risk modification. The average screening time will be 45 minutes to one hour. Anyone planning on having cholesterol testing should not eat or drink for 8 hours prior to the test. Your personal medications may be taken with small amounts of water. To find out the location for screening at each participating hospital, parking recommendations and specific screenings available on site, call 520-872-4344.
