    <title>Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital Site of Breakthrough Orthopaedic Surgery</title>
    <link>http://carondelet.org/home/about-carondelet/newsroom/news-articles/articletype/articleview/articleid/2/carondelet-st-marys-hospital-site-of-breakthrough-orthopaedic-surgery.aspx</link>
    <description>Carondelet St. Mary&amp;rsquo;s Hospital was the site of an impressive new form of knee replacement surgery this week. The first total knee replacement using the most sophisticated imaging and computer-aided 3D technology took place November 30. This computer-aided 3D technology results in a more precise fit for the knee implant.

Edward Petrow Jr., D.O., of the Tucson Orthopaedic Institute performed the TruMatch Solutions supported total knee replacement surgery at Carondelet St. Mary&amp;rsquo;s. TruMatch Solutions are customized surgical guides created from a patient&amp;rsquo;s unique anatomy to achieve the best placement of the knee implant.

&quot;The key factor in successful total knee replacement is precision,&quot; says Edward Petrow, Jr., D.O., orthopaedic surgeon at Tucson Orthopaedic Institute. &quot;Custom fit knee replacement gives us an edge by allowing us to make very accurate cuts using advanced imagery of a patient&amp;rsquo;s anatomy. Quicker, more accurate, surgery should result in faster recovery, less pain, fewer complications and a longer-lasting result.&quot;

&amp;ldquo;St. Mary&amp;rsquo;s is proud to host the area&amp;rsquo;s first total knee replacement of this kind,&amp;rdquo; said Amy Beiter, M.D. Chief Medical Officer at Carondelet St. Mary&amp;rsquo;s Hospital. &amp;ldquo;As Arizona&amp;rsquo;s first hospital, it is exciting that we continue to offer innovative &amp;ldquo;firsts&amp;rdquo; to our community.&amp;rdquo;

Fast Facts:

    Knee replacement surgery is one of the most common joint replacement procedures.
    With baby boomers maintaining a more active lifestyle as they age, knee replacement surgeries are becoming more common.
    TruMatch Solutions utilizes CT technology to create detailed 3D image of the bone, allowing more precise mechanical alignment of the knee that that of traditional MRI scans.

Here&amp;rsquo;s how the technology works: First a CT scan is taken of the leg, from hip to ankle. The image is sent to the manufacturer where a team develops a computerized 3D model of the knee. Upon approval by the patient&amp;rsquo;s surgeon, customized instrumentation guides are created of the knee. Those guides are delivered to the surgeon to help precisely position the knee implant. In all, this reduces the number of surgical steps and assures proper implant placement. Visit www.tucsonortho.com for more information.

Dr. Edward Petrow, Carondelet St. Mary&amp;rsquo;s Hospital leaders and the patient are available for interviews. Flip video of the surgery is also available for media use. Please contact Jason Fenwick at jfenwick@carondelet.org or (520) 349-1845.
