CEO Challenges Tucson Business Leaders to Jump Start! Employees’ Health

Odette Bolano, Chief Executive Officer of Carondelet Heart &
Vascular Institute and Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital, is issuing a
challenge to all area business leaders – jump start your employees’
personal wellness efforts for their sake and the sake of a healthier
Tucson.

“Sixty percent of the nation’s Business Roundtable CEOs cite
healthcare as their number one cost pressure,” notes Bolano, who will
chair the 2011 American Heart Association’s Start! Heart Walk in Tucson
on April 30, 2011. “Productivity losses from health problems cost
American employers 226 billion dollars annually and yet physical
inactivity and obesity are on the rise. What are we doing as employers
to increase our employees’ commitment to living a healthier and more
physically fit lifestyle? The answer is -- not enough.”

A great first step, encourages Bolano, is to interest employees in
becoming active participants in this spring’s Start! Heart Walk. “Now is
the time to launch a campaign amongst your employees, challenging and
encouraging them to build teams and participate,” according to Bolano.
“This is an opportunity to improve both the fiscal health of your
company and the physical health of your employees.”

Jeff Christensen, CEO of Health South Rehabilitation Institute of Tucson
and a member of the American Heart Association Board of Directors,
agrees. “Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the United
States,” states Christensen. “We need major corporate leaders and small
business owners alike to make a commitment to help make our community
healthier, one business at a time.”

The 2011 Start! Heart Walk takes place on Saturday, April 30 at Tucson’s
Reid Park. Participants form teams and are encouraged to walk the 3
mile course in support of the American Heart Association and its
never-ending battle to inform, educate, and prevent heart disease in the
U.S. The dollars raised fund research, public education efforts, public
awareness campaigns, and CPR training for thousands each year.

To learn more about this year’s walk and how to register, go to: www.tucsonheartwalk.org.

Sponsors of this year’s Start! Heart Walk include: Carondelet Health
Network, University Medical Center, Wells Fargo Private Client Services,
Tucson Medical Center, Amedisys Home Health Services, Cigna, and
Morrison Food Services.

Kids’ Corner Dedicated at Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital

There's a wonderful new place for kids to just be kids at Carondelet St.
Mary's Hospital: the Kids' Corner was officially dedicated and blessed
today.

Children visiting loved ones at Carondelet St. Mary’s have a place to
play, laugh, create and color. The Kids’ Corner includes small tables
and chairs, rubber floor tiles, wall-mounted activity boards, games, and
art supplies.

“Our Kids’ Corner is a one more step in enhancing the patient care
experience at St. Mary’s, not only for patients, but for the families
and friends who come to visit our patients,” said Winnie Fritz, Chief
Executive Officer at Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital. “The Kids Corner
occupies one of our seven garden spaces and offers a protected outdoor
space for quiet children’s activities. With children having a place to
be entertained, our adult patients can rest in a quieter environment;
and adults can spend quality time talking about health decisions and
personal matters.”

Kids’ Corner, located on the Third Floor near the public elevators, is
the second in a series of healing garden renovations at Carondelet St.
Mary’s. These healing gardens are designed to create an enhanced healing
environment throughout the hospital.

The Kids’ Corner was made possible by generous funding from the St. Mary’s Auxilians and Carondelet Foundation.
Several
of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet attended the dedication and
Sr. Irma Odabashian performed the blessing of the Kids’ Corner.

Hospital volunteers will occasionally staff the Kids’ Corner, which is
open during hospital visiting hours, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., but children
must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or older.

Carondelet Hospice & Palliative Care Presents “Caring for Veterans” Workshop

U.S. Veterans are the epitome of bravery and heroism. Many enlisted in a time of war, proudly served multiple tours of duty and made sacrifices most of us cannot begin to imagine. President Barack Obama said that, “caring for veterans is a responsibility and duty for all Americans.” In Tucson, you can do your part to say “thank you” by learning how to appropriately care for these brave souls special needs as they age.

Carondelet Hospice & Palliative Care presents Hero Within: Honoring & Caring for Veterans Workshop Tuesday, November 16 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Riverpark Inn at 350 S. Freeway in Tucson.

More than 1,800 Veterans die every day in this country—that’s about 54,000 people a month, according to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Veterans represent a quarter of all deaths in the U.S. This event includes multi-phased workshop on caring for their health and aging needs and an opportunity to meet with professionals dedicated to Veterans’ care in our community. The key presenter will be Deborah Grassman, a nurse at VA Medical Center Bay Pines in Florida and author of Peace at Last: Stories of Hope and Healing for Veterans and Their Families.

If you are a veteran, know a veteran, or care for a veteran, you will be both inspired and educated by stories that will open your mind and heart to ways that you can enhance healing at the end of veteran’s lives.

The workshop is FREE for all veterans, $10 for guests of Veterans. To register, call 520-205-7557 or email Tara Norris at tnorris@carondelet.org.
