    <title>Diabetes Incidence Rising Nationally – Local Health Care Providers Take Action</title>
    <link>http://carondelet.org/home/about-carondelet/newsroom/news-articles/articletype/articleview/articleid/6/diabetes-incidence-rising-nationally-local-health-care-providers-take-action.aspx</link>
    <description>The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sounded the alarm in October about the rising incidence of diabetes in the United States.

Here in Tucson, health care providers are well aware of the prevalence and consequences among a growing at-risk population. In September, an unprecedented regional initiative to prevent diabetes emerged. The Arizona Diabetes Alliance is a unique partnership formed among Carondelet Health Network, Pima County, University Physicians Healthcare and the University of Arizona.

The group&amp;rsquo;s mission is simple, but powerful: Coordinate a significant regional effort to prevent diabetes in those at risk and improve the lives of individuals living with the disease. &amp;ldquo;There are a little more than 500,000 Arizonans living with diabetes,&amp;rdquo; says Harold Szerlip, MD, professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. &amp;ldquo;As healthcare providers and community partners, it is our mission to join resources and collaborate effectively to fight the battle of diabetes in Arizona.&amp;rdquo;

Beginning Nov. 3, the Alliance will host a series of educational classes and health screenings in conjunction with Diabetes Awareness Month in November. Adults 18 years and older are encouraged to come to any of the following locations to receive blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, as well as information on the treatment and prevention of diabetes.

&amp;ldquo;The Arizona Diabetes Alliance intends to become an invaluable resource for this community, addressing the alarming growth rate of patients in Tucson and Southern Arizona,&amp;rdquo; said Donna Zazworsky, Carondelet Health Network Vice President for Community Health &amp;amp; Continuum Care. &amp;ldquo;Carondelet has been a significant resource for Southern Arizonans living with diabetes for the past 25 years. Partnering with our fellow health care colleagues in this community to battle this epidemic is simply the right thing to do. Making a difference of this kind is a major part of our Mission to Heal.&amp;rdquo;

The Arizona Diabetes Alliance aims to achieve its goal to prevent diabetes and improve the lives of people living with diabetes through a variety of community outreach efforts. There will be wellness and prevention workshops, workforce development and educational seminars, and new efforts in patient care.

About Diabetes

    Diabetes cases in the United States are rising at an alarming rate, according to the CDC, which estimates by 2050, as many as one-third of all American adults could have diabetes (October 2010).
    In 2007, it was the seventh-leading cause of death in the U.S. These new estimates account for higher census figures for minorities and the elderly, groups that generally have a higher rate of Type 2 diabetes.
    One out of every three children born today will face a future with diabetes
    Currently, 24 million American adults and children are living with diabetes and an additional 57 million Americans are at risk.

    <title>Tucson Heart Hospital Becomes Carondelet Heart &amp; Vascular Institute</title>
    <link>http://carondelet.org/home/about-carondelet/newsroom/news-articles/articletype/articleview/articleid/7/tucson-heart-hospital-becomes-carondelet-heart-vascular-institute.aspx</link>
    <description>Carondelet Health Network announced today that it has changed the name of Tucson Heart Hospital to Carondelet Heart &amp;amp; Vascular Institute. The renaming is a direct effort to raise community awareness about the connection between this specialty cardiovascular care facility and the other member hospitals within Carondelet Health Network, including Carondelet St. Joseph&amp;rsquo;s Hospital and Carondelet St. Mary&amp;rsquo;s Hospital in Tucson, and Carondelet Holy Cross Hospital in Nogales, Arizona. Tucson Heart Hospital joined Carondelet Health Network in 2006.

&amp;ldquo;The word &amp;lsquo;institute&amp;rsquo; was chosen for a number of reasons. Healthcare in America is changing, and health care providers are expanding their view far beyond merely treating the sick to a focus on prevention, education, wellness, research and rehabilitation,&amp;rdquo; notes Odette Bolano, RN, MHA, FACHE, Chief Executive Officer of Carondelet Heart &amp;amp; Vascular Institute. &amp;ldquo;This new name helps showcase Carondelet&amp;rsquo;s commitment to all those aspects of care, as well as our comprehensive, network-wide heart and vascular program.&amp;rdquo;

Opened by a team of forward-thinking physicians in 1997, Tucson Heart Hospital was considered a revolutionary approach to healthcare when it became Southern Arizona&amp;rsquo;s first and only freestanding facility dedicated to the care of heart and vascular illness. Today, the newly named Carondelet Heart &amp;amp; Vascular Institute has 60 all-private patient rooms and is designated as a Thomson Reuters Top 100 Hospital for Cardiovascular Care. It is one of only three Accredited Chest Pain Centers in Southern Arizona and has also been designated by the Arizona Department of Health Services as a Cardiac Arrest Center.&amp;nbsp;

Carondelet Heart &amp;amp; Vascular Institute offers many modern answers to surgical needs -- including minimally invasive cardiac surgery, off-pump heart bypass and minimally invasive treatments for aortic aneurisms, Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), and blocked arteries throughout the body. In addition, the Institute has a new electrophysiology lab under construction that will offer patients atrial fibrillation ablation.

Carondelet Heart &amp;amp; Vascular Institute is also home to a HeartSaver CT, one of the quickest and easiest screening methods available in the detection of heart disease. A HeartSaver CT scan may aid in early detection years before a person shows any symptoms.

&amp;ldquo;We strive to provide the very best in heart and vascular care for our community and this region of our state. At Carondelet Heart &amp;amp; Vascular Institute, we will continue that focus with the help of our incredibly talented and dedicated physicians, associates and care teams,&amp;rdquo; adds Bolano.</description>
