This week, Carondelet Health Network announced that St. Mary’s Hospital was named a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™ and ranked among the top five percent of hospitals nationwide for clinical performance. “This is a testament to a great effort by our staff and associates who have an obsession with high quality and patient satisfaction,” said Steven Shapiro, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and Chief of Staff at St. Mary’s Hospital.

The designation came from HealthGrades®, a leading independent healthcare ratings organization. Only 263 hospitals, out of 5,000 in the nationwide study, received this significant national recognition and St. Mary’s was the only hospital in Southern Arizona to receive the award. The honor propels Tucson onto HealthGrades List of Best Cities for Quality Hospital Care. Community and civic leaders have responded with tremendous pride:

“The Tucson Metro Chamber congratulates Carondelet St. Mary's for its outstanding achievement. The Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence takes health care in Tucson and Southern Arizona to an elite level. Awards of this nature are not won at a single point in time, but rather every hour of every day.” - Michael Varney, President and CEO, Tucson Metro Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s no surprise to me that Carondelet St. Mary’s achieved this prestigious award. St. Mary’s is the largest private employer in Ward One. The hospital is known for its caring and high quality customer service, and for respecting the diverse people and cultures that make Tucson such a special place to live.”
- Regina Romero, Tucson City Councilor for Ward One.

“This award further enhances our reputation for high quality health care in Southern Arizona. We congratulate Carondelet Health Network and St. Mary’s for this important award. Health care systems play an important role in helping Southern Arizona achieve its economic development goals by creating quality jobs and improving a community’s reputation as a great place to live and work. Access to affordable, quality health care is a contributing factor for businesses determining whether to relocate or expand here, so strong health care is an important enabler to the economic well-being of Southern Arizona.”
- Joe Snell, President and CEO, Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities, Inc.

Beyond earning the top award as a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™, St. Mary’s received 5-Star ratings (the highest possible) for its care of heart attacks, heart failure, stroke, pneumonia, sepsis and respiratory failure. The hospital also achieved HealthGrades® Critical Care Excellence Award, placing it among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide for critical care. “I’ve been fortunate to work at St. Mary’s for the past 28 years as a cardiologist,” said John Boulet. MD. “It has been rewarding to see the hospital grow into a true center of excellence. I enjoy working in a hospital that constantly strives to improve patient care. In cardiology, our nurses, technical staff, administrators and physicians have all pushed the envelope to assure better outcomes for our patients with heart attacks and heart failure, and it is an honor to be recognized for those efforts.”

St. Mary’s Hospital is currently undergoing a $1.75MM exterior renovation, expected to be completed in June and funded by the Centurions, a long-standing local civic and fundraising organization that supports the ongoing mission of Carondelet Health Network. “We are so very proud of St. Mary's for this great recognition,” said Stan Spackeen, Centurions President. “It is wonderful when the efforts of so many dedicated people create positive results that benefit the entire community. We are honored to be associated with St. Mary's Hospital and Carondelet Health Network and wish both continued success!"

HealthGrades® Hospital Quality and Clinical Excellence study, in which St. Mary’s is highlighted, objectively identifies hospitals with the best overall clinical performance across all 26 medical diagnoses and procedures. Unlike other hospital quality studies, HealthGrades evaluates hospitals solely on clinical outcomes, risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications. HealthGrades’ analysis is based on approximately 40 million Medicare discharges for the years 2008, 2009 and 2010.

About HealthGrades Hospital Quality Distinctions As part of this study, HealthGrades evaluates each of the nation’s 5,000 nonfederal hospitals in 26 procedures and diagnoses, allowing individuals to compare their local hospitals online at HealthGrades hospital quality distinctions are independently created; no hospital can opt-in or opt-out of being evaluated, and no hospital pays to be evaluated.
