Carondelet Health Network is bringing state-of-the-art technology to Carondelet Holy Cross Hospital in Nogales, Ariz. in the form of electronic health records (EHR). On June 21, implementation of an expanded computerized patient care records system will enhance the critical access hospital’s ability to not only track patient medical histories, but more effectively coordinate services, and any emergent or immediate needs while a person is in the hospital. As the only hospital in Santa Cruz County, Holy Cross serves the more than 47,000 residents in the southern most portion of the state.

“Electronic health records are being implemented in hospitals nationwide,” notes Tony Fonze, Vice President of Information Services for Carondelet Health Network in Tucson, Ariz. “The goal is to increase the quality and safety of patient care with greater efficiency.”

For example, better care can be provided in the Emergency Department with consistent collection of accurate patient data. When physicians have improved access to patients’ medication histories, allergies and prescriptions, safety with regard to medication is strengthened.

“EHR systems have been in place at Carondelet Medical Group since 2006 and are currently being implemented in all Carondelet hospitals in Tucson,” adds Winnie Fritz, MSN, EdD, Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital. “Instituting EHR capabilities in all of our facilities throughout the Network means that when a patient, who first seeks help at Holy Cross or in one of our primary care practices, needs a higher level of care and must be transported to one of our Tucson facilities, his/her EHR is accessible to physicians and clinicians in those hospitals instantly. That history minimizes redundancy and Carondelet allows the patient to move more effortlessly through our system.”
