Carondelet Health Network is proud to welcome Ryan M. Kretzer, M.D., a neurosurgeon from The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore to the medical staff of Carondelet Neurological Institute (CNI) at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Johns Hopkins is world-renown for the care of neurological patients and was recently named the Best Hospital for neurology and neurosurgery by U.S. News & World Report. Dr. Kretzer spent a total of 16 years at the premiere teaching facility -- as a student, resident and instructor. Dr. Kretzer graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed both his training in neurological surgery and his fellowship training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. His specialty is the treatment of degenerative disc disease and spinal tumors utilizing minimally invasive and complex neurosurgical techniques. He now brings that expertise and interest in disorders of the spine to Carondelet Neurological Institute.

“I was intrigued by the dedication and commitment to neurological and neurosurgical care that was being developed at the CNI,” said Dr. Kretzer. “This seemed like an ideal place to translate my background and training into patient care.”

"Having spent 16 years of my career at Johns Hopkins as well, I am intimately familiar with the depth and breadth of training Dr. Kretzer received there," said Dr. Eric P. Sipos, neurosurgeon and Medical Director of the Carondelet Neurological Institute. "The residents of Southern Arizona and beyond who turn to Carondelet for their neurological care deserve to find superb neurologists and neurosurgeons at their bedside. We have assembled the very best faculty in this region at Carondelet Neurological Institute and Dr. Kretzer will fit right in."

During his tenure at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Kretzer was an instructor in advanced spinal surgery techniques. He also studied spinal biomechanics in the Orthopedic Spinal Research Laboratory at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Maryland, and he spent two years working for the FDA, reviewing neurosurgical medical devices for safety and effectiveness prior to their approval for use in the United States.

Dr. Kretzer began practicing at Carondelet Neurological Institute in July and is available for consultation. For more information, call 520-873-3333.
